#ThisLittleGirlIsMe
To mark International Day of the Girl 2021, Inspiring Girls is launching a new global campaign #ThisLittleGirlIsMe “to make women role models easily available to girls on social media by flooding our Instagram feed with inspirinational women sharing their stories.”
“Research shows that more than 90% of girls feel they have higher personal and career aspirations after following inspirational women on social media – this campaign will provide them with thousands of women from diverse backgrounds to follow and to be inspired by.” [source: #ThisLittleGirlIsMe]
When I was a little girl…
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a cowgirl…
That would have been a great caption but to be honest, I really didn’t know what I wanted to be when I was little.
Even when I graduated from my Law degree, I still didn’t know what I wanted to be, I just knew I didn’t want to be a lawyer!
It was only a couple of years later when I went to a lecture about human rights that I finally had my lightbulb moment. I wanted to work in human rights and make a difference in the world!
So I ended up working for the United Nations in countries like Haiti, Rwanda, Bosnia and Burundi and I hope that I made a little difference in the world….(you can read more about my UN story here).
About 15 years later, I met David, fell in love, moved back to England and decided to become a photographer (more about how I became a photographer here).
Alot of people ask me if I miss my UN life? And my answer is always no, I really don’t!
I’m very thankful for the work and experiences I had with the United Nations but I absolutely love my new life. I love being a photographer, I love my husband and daughter and I love our life in Worcestershire.
So, what advice would I give to that little cowgirl who was me (and of course to my daughter Livvy)? I think it would have to be:
| BE YOURSELF | Believe and be true to yourself, don’t try to conform.
| BE POSITIVE | There are far too many negative people in the world, always try and look on the bright side of life.
| MAKE A DIFFERENCE | It doesn’t have to be a ‘I want to change the world’ difference, every little act of helping and caring for others makes a difference.
| BE KIND | Always always always be kind.
| And last but not least | KEEP SMILING |
And guess what? We live on a farm and the cows are mooing in the background so I guess I am a bit of a cowgirl after all!
