What confidence really means

I call myself The Confidence Photographer.

And the more I do this work, the more I realise how misunderstood confidence can be.

We often think of confidence as something loud.

Walking into a room and owning it.

Being polished.Being fearless.

Never doubting yourself.

Always knowing exactly what to say.

But the word confidence comes from the Latin confidere — meaning to trust.

Not to perform.

Not to pretend.

Not to look perfect.

To trust.

And I think that changes everything.

Because maybe confidence isn’t about becoming someone different.

Maybe it’s about coming back into trust with yourself.

Trusting that you don’t have to hide.

Trusting that you are allowed to take up space.

Trusting that you can be seen as you are — not only on the days when you feel polished and ready, but on the very human days too.

And that’s why photography feels so powerful to me.

Because for so many women, being in front of a camera can bring up all the places where that trust has been knocked.

The little comments we’ve carried.

The photos we hated.

The years of avoiding the camera.

The quiet belief that everyone else somehow knows how to do this, and we don’t.

But what I see, again and again, is that the right experience in front of the camera can begin to change that.

Not in a dramatic “new woman” kind of way.

More in a soft, steady, oh… there I am kind of way.

A woman starts to relax.

She stops trying so hard.

She begins to see what I’m seeing.

And then there’s that moment.

The “this is me” moment.

That’s the bit I love most.

Not perfection.

Trust.

Trusting yourself enough to be seen.

And maybe that’s what confidence really is.
